Capturing the Spirit of Indiana Jones
Indiana Jones has always been more than just a series of films; it’s a cultural touchstone. From the rousing music and intricate choreography to its timeless humor and iconic hero, the franchise embodies a unique charm that continues to resonate with audiences. Capturing that essence in a video game is no small feat, but Indiana Jones and the Great Circle aims to achieve just that. Developed by MachineGames, this highly anticipated title promises to deliver a modern, immersive experience while preserving the nostalgic magic of the original movies.
Crafting this blend of old and new required meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to authenticity. Every aspect, from the visuals and sound to the gameplay and narrative, was painstakingly designed to bring players as close as possible to feeling like they’re starring in their very own Indiana Jones adventure. Here’s how MachineGames pulled it off.
Rediscovering the ’80s Aesthetic

Recreating the visual style of the original Indiana Jones films required MachineGames to dive deep into the aesthetics of ’80s cinema. Creative Director Axel Torvenius emphasized the importance of staying true to the original films’ visual identity:
“Aim was to faithfully capture the essence of Raiders of the Lost Ark rather than reimagine it. From the beginning, we focused on creating an experience that instantly immerses players in the iconic world of Indiana Jones”
The team conducted an in-depth study of the original movies, examining their use of color, lighting, and camera techniques. They even analyzed the film stock used during production to replicate its texture and warmth. Translating these elements into a video game environment presented unique challenges, particularly because players can explore freely, potentially breaking the cinematic compositions.
MachineGames crafted specific game locations to guide player movement and frame certain views, ensuring that every moment feels like it was pulled straight from a movie. For cutscenes, the team enlisted a Director of Photography to replicate the dynamic camera work of the films, using motion capture technology to create scenes with authentic angles, pans, and velocity.
Capturing the Spirit of Iconic Audio

The auditory experience is as essential to Indiana Jones as the visuals. From John Williams’ legendary score to the crack of Indy’s whip, sound design plays a crucial role in evoking nostalgia. Audio Director Pete Ward and his team went to extraordinary lengths to achieve this:
“Conducted an in-depth study of the original films’ audio design, identifying signature elements like Indy’s voice, the whip’s crack, the revolver’s fire, and the unique sound of his punches. To preserve authenticity, we meticulously reproduced these sounds using methods inspired by the original sound design team.”
The team recorded hundreds of hours of audio, using vintage props such as leather jackets, boots, and springs to replicate the authentic sounds of the era. For the music, MachineGames enlisted composer Gordy Haab, who recorded new tracks at the iconic Abbey Road Studios, using some of the same session musicians who worked on the original Raiders of the Lost Ark score. This approach ensured that the game’s soundtrack felt both fresh and firmly rooted in the Indiana Jones universe.
A New Adventure, True to Its Roots
While the game’s aesthetics and sound are inspired by the past, its story ventures into uncharted territory. Set between Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle introduces a brand-new tale that fits seamlessly into the existing lore.
Lead Narrative Designer Tommy Tordsson Björk explained how the team approached this challenge:
“Creating a story that felt authentic to the franchise required extensive research. We dug into Indiana Jones’ rich history, including the films, comics, and games, to ensure every detail was accurate. Lucasfilm Games’ guidance was invaluable in aligning our narrative with the broader Indiana Jones universe.”
The result is a story that balances thrilling action, historical intrigue, and the signature humor fans expect. Every character, location, and puzzle was designed to reflect the 1930s setting while staying true to the adventurous spirit of the films.
Immersive Gameplay

One of the most significant challenges in creating Indiana Jones and the Great Circle was translating the tightly edited, linear action sequences of the films into interactive gameplay. The team relied heavily on motion capture to bring the characters and stunts to life, working with professional stunt performers to ensure every movement felt authentic.
Creative Director Axel Torvenius emphasized their ambitious approach:
“Elevated motion capture to a new level by incorporating detailed stunts and dynamic combat choreography. Every punch, whip crack, and daring escape was crafted to reflect the adrenaline and excitement that defined the classic Indiana Jones films.”
The game also features puzzles inspired by the franchise’s iconic traps and ancient ruins. These challenges are designed to feel intuitive yet rewarding, striking a balance between movie-like simplicity and engaging gameplay.
Infusing Humor and Charm
Indiana Jones wouldn’t be complete without its unique blend of humor and charm. MachineGames worked tirelessly to incorporate this into every aspect of the game, from environmental storytelling to combat mechanics.
The team even included moments reminiscent of the movies’ comedic beats, such as Indy using unconventional items as weapons or solving puzzles in unorthodox ways. These touches ensure that players feel like they’re stepping into the shoes of the daring, resourceful, and often witty archaeologist.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle isn’t just a game; it’s a love letter to one of cinema’s most beloved franchises. Through meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to authenticity, MachineGames has crafted an experience that feels both nostalgic and new.
