For more than a decade, one image has been tied to Until Dawn.
Snow.
Dark forests.
Cabins buried deep in the mountains.
The original game turned an isolated winter getaway into one of PlayStation’s most memorable horror experiences.
So when Firesprite finally revealed Until Dawn 2 during PlayStation’s June State of Play showcase, I expected more snow.
More mountains.
More freezing nights.
Instead, the sequel is heading somewhere completely different.
A tropical island.
And honestly, that might be the most interesting thing about the entire reveal.
Horror Usually Hides in the Dark
Until Dawn never needed much convincing.
The setting did half the work.
A group of young people trapped on a mountain during a snowstorm already sounds like the beginning of a horror movie.
A tropical island is different.
At least at first.
Bright skies don’t usually feel threatening.
Palm trees don’t exactly scream survival horror.
That is why this setting immediately caught my attention.
Firesprite appears to be taking a location that looks beautiful on the surface and slowly turning it into something much more unsettling.
Good horror often works that way.
The safest places become the most dangerous.
The familiar becomes uncomfortable.
The audience starts questioning everything.
Meet Dead True
The new story follows a paranormal content crew known as Dead True.
And the funniest part?
They’re frauds.
At least in the beginning.
The group built its popularity around staged scares, fake ghost sightings, and carefully edited paranormal content. Their luck changes after landing a major television deal that sends them to an abandoned tropical island to film a new episode.
That’s when things stop being fake.
Very quickly.
What I like about this setup is how modern it feels.
The original Until Dawn felt heavily inspired by classic slasher films.
This sequel feels inspired by internet culture.
Ghost-hunting channels.
Viral content.
People chasing views.
It’s a different type of horror setup, but one that feels surprisingly natural for 2027.
The Butterfly Effect Is Back
Thankfully, Firesprite isn’t throwing away what made Until Dawn special.
The Butterfly Effect system is returning.
That means choices still matter.
Relationships still matter.
And there is a very good chance players will spend half the game wondering whether a small decision from two hours ago is about to come back and haunt them.
That uncertainty was always one of the original game’s biggest strengths.
Sometimes the most terrifying moment wasn’t a monster.
It was realizing you might have made the wrong choice.
Dr. Hill Returns
Some things simply wouldn’t feel right without Peter Stormare.
One of the best moments from the reveal was the confirmation that Dr. Hill is coming back.
The character became one of the defining parts of the original experience.
Calm.
Uncomfortable.
Never quite trustworthy.
Every conversation with him felt like something was slightly wrong.
Apparently that isn’t changing anytime soon.
Honestly, Until Dawn without Dr. Hill would have felt strange.
Firesprite Has a Big Opportunity
This is probably the biggest challenge facing the sequel.
The original Until Dawn built a loyal fanbase because it felt different.
Players genuinely cared about keeping characters alive.
Then they spent years arguing online about who they accidentally got killed.
That’s not easy to recreate.
But Firesprite seems to understand what people actually loved about the original.
The announcement wasn’t focused on bigger explosions.
Or giant action sequences.
Or turning the series into something else.
Instead, the reveal focused on choices, characters, relationships, and survival.
That’s exactly where it should be.
The Best Part of the Reveal
Oddly enough, it wasn’t a trailer moment.
It wasn’t a monster reveal.
It wasn’t a gameplay mechanic.
It was the realization that Firesprite isn’t trying to remake Until Dawn.
They’re trying to move it somewhere new.
A new cast.
A new setting.
A new story.
But the same feeling that every decision matters.
That’s probably the hardest balance to get right.
And based on what we’ve seen so far, the studio understands that.

Final Thoughts
The easiest thing Firesprite could have done was copy the original Until Dawn.
More snow.
More cabins.
More mountain horror.
Instead, the studio is taking the series somewhere unexpected.
That alone makes Until Dawn 2 worth paying attention to.
Whether the island becomes as iconic as Blackwood Mountain remains to be seen.
But one thing is already clear.
The next Until Dawn isn’t interested in repeating the past.
It’s trying to create a new nightmare.
And that’s exactly what a sequel should do.
